COON RAPIDS, Minn. – (Feb. 1, 2018) – The westbound lanes of the land bridge on Main St./County State Aid Highway (CSAH) 14 between Coon Creek and Coon Creek Blvd./CSAH 18 in Coon Rapids has been closed due to the structural failure of a bridge span. The emergency closure affects westbound traffic only. The closure is expected to last up to two months.
Highway Department engineers, as well as a consulting bridge engineer, determined that while a complete failure of the bridge span is not imminent, closure of the westbound lanes was necessary in the interest of public safety.
The detour is Hanson Blvd./CSAH 78, to Bunker Lake Blvd./CSAH 116, to Coon Creek Blvd./CSAH 18 to Main St./CSAH 14.
A land bridge is a structure built over a bog or other soft soil. In order to confirm the exact nature of the structural failure, an area on the north side of the bridge is being excavated to give engineers access to the underside of the bridge slab. Repair work is expected to begin immediately.
