ALEX TIERNEY
About:
My name is Alex Tierney and I have lived in Blaine, MN for almost nine years now and in that time since I have become a community organizer for manufactured housing. There is a housing bills, the manufactured housing bill of rights, that I have been working with the community to get passed through candidate forums and town halls, rallies at the Capitol to build relationships with our legislators to make change. Phone banking, knocking doors, talking policy, and testifying at the capitol are some of the things I have done alongside putting on candidate forums and town halls. Currently at my day job I work for the state of Minnesota as an accountant and I am also a proud union member. I had never thought of getting involved in politics until recently with the encouragement of other people I organize with in Blaine. I have real stakes tied into our community’s success and I want to step up to face the housing crisis we are facing in Blaine and to make sure we fight our real enemy, the greedy corporations and private equity firms, who are trying to pit us against our neighbors so they can keep draining us.
Important Issues:
We are in a housing crisis; private equity and special interests run unchecked in Blaine. Now is not the time for indecision or politics as usual, what we need is a fighter. We can have champions for affordable housing and manufactured homes in government. I can be that champion and that’s why I’m stepping up. In order to do this we should get rid of corporate welfare to both apply pressure on the greedy private interests trying to move in and push those already here out who are gouging us. Why do billion dollar companies need millions in tax breaks to come into Blaine while also pushing out our popular small businesses? If you are making a billion dollars in profits you aren’t struggling right now but everyday people are. Small businesses are. You should pay your fair share to do business, not expect my tax dollars to subsidize it.
Goals if Elected:
Mixed use zoning land use and more affordable housing development, pressure the city to not green light corporations, private equity, and other special interests from moving in to the city, utilizing the city council’s soft power and letters of support at the state capitol to bring back wins that benefits the community such as a more progressive tax code so the rich pay more in taxes so homeowners aren’t squeezed as much by property taxes, more transparency so the community can better reach the city council and vice versa.
