ANOKA-RAMSEY RENEWS EQUITY AND INCLUSION EFFORT

Brandyn Woodard is leading a renewed effort at Anoka-Ramsey Community College to address issues of diversity and closing learning gaps. Woodard recently took over a new position as Vice President of Equity and Inclusion. He says meeting with students about their needs and bringing in more diverse faculty are two early steps toward improving student success.

HY-VEE CAN’T PROMISE IT WILL START ON BLAINE STORE THIS YEAR, DESPITE EXTENSION

Hy-Vee asked the city for a one-year extension of its conditional use permit for the land it acquired across Main Street from Blaine High School in late 2018. Preliminary site work and grading was completed on the plot, which is very close to a large neighborhood and Jefferson Middle School, about a year ago, and nothing has happened there since.

Figures show that greens fees, golf cart rentals, and driving range rounds were up much higher than forecasted for 2020, while facility rentals, food and beverage sales, and advertising sales were down.

FUNDRAISING GROUP TO HELP FOOD SHELF EXPAND

Hope for the Community Food Shelf finished 2020 serving 43,000 families more than 2 million pounds of groceries. A year after the start of a pandemic that cost many families jobs, Dr. Alan Goracke, founder of Hope for the Community, says the need is still great.

STUDENTS MAY CHOOSE VIRTUAL LEARNING IN THE FALL

Schools have re-opened to in person classes, but some students are still learning virtually at home by their own choice. The Anoka-Hennepin District is now registering families that want to continue virtual learning in the fall.

DISPOSING OF PRESCRIPTION DRUGS COULD HELP WITH RISING DRUG ABUSE CASES

According to the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 9.7 million people misused prescription pain relievers and another 4.9 million people misused prescription stimulants. To help address this problem, the Drug Enforcement Agency encourages local law enforcement to collect unused or expired prescription drugs year round, and also to put an extra effort in on an annual drug take back day.
