“The nice thing about Snow Day is that it is free,” said Wargo Nature Center recreation specialist Todd Murawski. “Free open to the public family oriented event. The event is in collaboration with Anoka County Parks, Wargo Nature Center, and the cities of Lino Lakes and Blaine.”
If the weather cooperates, most of Snow Day will be spent on outdoor activities.
“The idea of Snow Day is to get people outside in the winter time. Show them their is lots of things to do in the winter time so we have snowshoeing available, cross country skiing if there is enough snow, ice fishing out on our lake, we have face painting, we have an animal presentation. The Zoomobile from the Minnesota Zoo is coming so even if it’s really cold out or we don’t have a lot of snow, which has happened some years, we always have those presentations,” said Murawski.

Murawski has been working at Wargo for more than 20 years, and always looks forward to one particular activity.
“My personal favorite one, and one people really seem to draw to is our ice fishing on our lake. A lot of times we’ll have it set up where they can set up to their ice fishing so they can do that activity. Not as many people as you think have tried ice fishing. The novelty of drilling a hole through the ice and trying to catch a fish is something new to a lot of people,” said Murawski.
While snowshoeing, ice fishing and cross country skiing are relatively common activities, Wargo Nature Center has something planned that most people have never heard of.
“Norwegian kicksleds are kind of a fun new activity for a lot of people. So folks can come out and try those things,” said Murawski.
For the less adventurous, there will also be a bonfire with s’mores, and a lot of activities indoors as well.
Snow Day can get busy, but they do provide a continuous shuttle service for those who have to park a little further away.
“We’ve had as many as 900 people at our Snow Day event. This year is our 17th annual so we’ve been doing it for quite a few years. Typically it’s around 500, last year it was about 450, it was a pretty cold year, but we anticipate this year with temperatures looking like they’ll be in the 20’s about 500 or 600 people will be at the event,” said Murawski.
There will be room for everyone to learn and try some new activities.
“I just invite everyone to come out. Like I say, Wargo is a great place, we have lots of activities for people to free. It’s a great way for people to come and experience some of those different ways people interact in the wintertime,” said Murawski.
