At this year’s 3M Open Media Day, reporters from several Minneapolis TV stations cornered him to ask about the ramifications of the PGA Tour having suspended all players–including former 3M Open winners–who signed to play on the Saudi Arabian-backed LIV Tour. But he tried to cast aside those conversations as he wanted to focus on bringing 150 of the world’s top players to TPC Twin Cities for the fourth straight year.
“We want this to be the happening of the summer,” said Cavner. “Let’s face it: we had two years of COVID that put us backwards. But we’re back and I think as you see us going forward and some of the good things that are happening on the PGA Tour, we feel like we’re in a really, really good position.”
COVID halted some of the periphery events of the weekend tournament–like a Zac Brown Band concert in 2019–and Cavner hopes to be able to add more events like that in future years. But he said the tournament couldn’t go on without the continued partnerships with North Metro community leaders.
“One of the best partnerships we have is right here in the city of Blaine,” he said. “The city of Blaine and also with Anoka County–without those two groups we could not have an event of this magnitude and have this many thousands and thousands of people come in and host something like this.”
The first round of the 3M Open tees off on Thursday, July 21 at TPC Twin Cities. Tickets are still available.
