HAM LAKE, Minn. – For most golfers winter time means a season spent away from fresh greens and driving ranges. Freezing temperatures also deter outdoor activities. But at Majestic Oaks, this is not the case. Golf fanatics and amateurs alike bring their clubs and snow boots to the only outdoor snow golf course in the state of Minnesota.
“It’s played with a tennis ball, an eight inch cup, and real golf clubs,” said Dan Jacott of Majestic Oaks, “The course is a nine hole par 36 on our executive suite.”
Many communities will offer a snow golf tournament on a frozen like during the season of winter. For the last three years Majestic Oaks has been the only snow golf course built on top of real greens. The course features two par threes and two par fives, various twists and turns, as well as an on-site bar on hole three.
“We have people show up with full golf bags but really all you need is one club, usually a five or six iron,” said Jacott.
The course is open Friday through Sunday allowing time to maintenance the course during the week because weather conditions can change so frequently. Majestic Oaks utilizes a real grounds crew with a modified tractor to comb out the fairways and greens.
Snow golf has grown popular largely to its affordability and simplicity. “On a day like today, it’s perfect. Weather is in the 30’s, people go on walks and cross country ski, why not have them golf,” mentioned Jacott, “I think the biggest thrill is watching people go out there and laugh.”
