COON RAPIDS, Minn – (June 8, 2017) – This month the Animal Humane Society is celebrating Adopt-a-Cat Month at all five locations throughout Minnesota. The goal of the initiative is to safely house as many cats as possible during the month-long event.
“[The] Animal Humane Society take[s] in about 23,000 animals each year and about half to a little more than half those animals are cats,” said Zach Nugent who works for the Animal Humane Society.
Each spring thousands of newborn kitties join the millions of cats in shelters across the country.
Nugent said “this time of season, we always see a big influx of cats and [there] seems to be more cats than there are homes.”
On the Animal Humane Society’s website, potential pet owners can look up specific information about the animals at the shelter. The website is updated every 5 to 10 minutes on which animals are still available. The staff also contributes to the animals’ profiles to better help potential pet owners find their perfect pet.
“We try to give as much upfront information as we can,” Nugent said. “Every home is a little different and we try and find animals that really fit into any home.”
Even so, some cats may not be suitable for a family lifestyle, so the Animal Humane Society has created the barn or business program to help more cats get adopted.
“[Cats] that may not make the best family pet … we can adopt out to a business or a barn owner,” Nugent said. “[The cats] are able to work, do what comes naturally to them, and have a good quality of life.”
In addition, when you adopt a pet from the Animal Humane Society your pet will receive their first round of vaccinations, and pet-owners will be given a free voucher to select veterinarians for a pet visit.
