MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – When an eight month old baby was abducted earlier this week, police used every resource at their disposal to ensure a quick and safe recovery. Thankfully, the child was found unharmed only a few hours later.
With advancements in technology police are now activating an entire community to help in crisis situations like a child abduction. The Amber Alert program has been around for several years. Local television stations will scroll child abduction information along the bottom of the screen and electronic billboards will provide details to passersby.
Now, police have one more resource at their fingertips that had many of us reaching for our cell phones this week. When police issue an Amber Alert, the information is now sent through the Wireless Emergency Alert System and automatically sends a message to cellular phones within the reach of certain transmission towers. The short message contains basic information about the abduction. The goal is to activate the entire community to find the missing child.
