ANOKA – Anoka County officially made a stance in support of diversity and opposing discrimination this week. At this week’s county board meeting, the board passed a resolution that highlighted the death of George Floyd, and committed to taking steps to end discrimination and divisiveness.
“As the first person of color on this board, representing the most diverse district, I do want Anoka County to say something to recognize the systemic racism that has consistently failed our black and brown communities,” said Anoka County Commissioner Mandy Meisner. “Acknowledgement is the first step to make change.”
“We need to get uncomfortable. We need to push ourselves to think differently and see things differently, and to understand and embrace our collective humanity,” said Anoka County Sheriff James Stuart.
The resolution passed unanimously, with some on the board saying that this statement backs up what they have always done.
