ANOKA, Minn. – State Representative Jim Abeler made a surprising announcement this week, declaring his bid for Minnesota’s U.S. Senate race in 2014. Abeler made the announcement through an e-mail blast, stating that he had already formed a campaign committee.
The Anoka Republican is a practicing chiropractor who has been in the Minnesota House for 15 years. Healthcare reform has been of particular interest to Abeler during his time as a lawmaker. He is the second GOP candidate to challenge Democratic Senator Al Franken for the seat he currently holds. The first to do so was Republican business executive Mike McFadden, who announced his candidacy at the end of May.
Abeler is serving his eighth term in the Minnesota House, and is currently the Republican lead on the Health and Human Services Finance Committee.
