One option is Lakeside Commons Park and Beach in Blaine. Lakeside is a hotspot that has a cool reputation. On a recent toasty Tuesday – when the thermometer topped out at 90 degrees – Lakeside was the ideal spot for those trying to escape the heat. “It’s definitely our most popular park that we have here within the city of our 65 parks,” said Nate Monahan of the Blaine Parks and Rec Department. “It has been pretty much since we’ve opened.”
There are plenty of options at Lakeside.
Said Monahan: “It’s a great place to come and enjoy and relax.” Most people flock to the beach to swim and play in the lake.
“The water is clean,” said Blaine’s Jen Kelly. “It’s nice that it’s pretty shallow.”
The splash pad is also a good way for toddlers and youngsters to cool off. They love playing in the dancing water that sprays out of concrete holes.
Meanwhile, other visitors opt for canoes or kayaks, so they can paddle on the lake and float their way into summer bliss.
“It’s just a great spot to come here in the summer, basically June through August,” Monahan said. “A lot of people come to enjoy it and love all the great features that we have where you can relax and cool down. There’s something for all ages as well.”
Fun in the sun
Lakeside is a perfect spot to be on a sun-drenched day.
Said Kelly: “We love coming here in the summertime.”
Kelly brings her two kids and their neighbor friends to Lakeside often.
“We love to go for walks and bike rides around the lake,” Kelly said. “The kids love the splash pad and the playground. We just like to utilize everything it has to offer.”
For Kelly this is the ideal location and setting.
“There are a lot of local beaches but since this is so close to us we come here the most,” Kelly said.
It’s all about fun in the sun at Lakeside which is why this park is a magnet for North Metro residents like Kelly. But it’s also crucial that visitors focus on staying safe while they soak up the sun.
“We do not have a lifeguard on duty,” Monahan said. “We have city attendants making sure people are following the rules. You definitely need to keep an eye on your kids.”
Lakeside is also affordable. There is no charge for Blaine residents who have a drivers license. Non-residents pay $10 per day to park or can buy a season pass for $30.
