BLAINE, Minn. — As warmer weather makes its slow approach, the City of Blaine wants to make sure you and your family have properly fitting bike helmets. The city is hosting its annual Bike Helmet Fitting at City Hall; there, the Blaine Police Department will sell and fit helmets for everyone from toddlers to adults.
People can choose to bring their own helmets and have them fit at no charge. If you don’t already own a helmet, don’t worry—the city is selling Bell Helmets in all sizes and colors for just $13—a bargain from store prices.
Head injuries are the cause of two-thirds of all bicycle-related deaths, and are also responsible for one-third of all non-fatal bicycle-related injuries. The free clinic hopes to reduce these numbers by raising awareness and promoting proper helmet use. Blaine police officer Andrea Hunt offered a friendly reminder that bike safety is for everyone, and is just important for adults as it is for children.
The City’s first clinic happened on April 16. If you missed this date, there’s still another chance– the next helmet fitting will happen on Tuesday, May 7 at Blaine City Hall from 4-8:00pm. Individuals who do not live in Blaine are also welcome. The event is free of charge and open to all ages.
