BILL AT STATEHOUSE WOULD LIMIT FEES DELIVERY FEES CAN CHARGE

(ST. PAUL) – A bill set to be introduced this week at the state capitol would cap the fees delivery fees food delivery services like DoorDash and GrubHub can charge at 15 percent.

“We use DoorDash and GrubHub and these delivery services at the capitol quite often,” said Rep. Erin Koegel (DFL – District 37A).  “When you get your bill it’s kind of a shocker about all of the delivery fees that are on it.”

Koegel joins her DFL colleague, Rep. Carlie Kotyza-Witthuhn (District 48B) in authoring the bill.

“We know it’s not just restaurants in Minneapolis and St. Paul and Edina that are being impacted by this restrictions,” said Kotyza-Witthuhn. “We think it would really make sense to go statewide with this sort of fee cap.”

Both representatives said they’ve heard from restaurant owners about the hardships they’ve encountered as they’ve increasingly come to rely on delivery services in the face of COVID-19 government-mandated restrictions on dine-in service.

“Most restaurants don’t necessarily have a delivery person on staff because in the past they didn’t need to do so, so they don’t really have an option if indoor dining is shut down again,” said Kotyza-Witthuhn. “Using these delivery services is really their only option.”

“We, as a legislature, really do what to make sure that some of these policies are in place going forward to make sure we have consumer protection, making sure we take care of small businesses, and making sure technology companies have a chance to grow as well,” said Koegel.
