BLAINE, Minn. – (Nov. 12, 2015) – In honor of our nation’s military, Blaine High School had an all-school Veteran’s Day ceremony that they invited veterans and their families to. But, leading up to Veteran’s Day, student saw daily reminders of military service in the hallways.
“As a prelude to the Veterans Day Program we set up five displays in our main locker area, that are just informational displays on the American flag, one on the service flags, there is a battlefield cross display, a POW MIA display and there is a POW MIA chair. That kind of gets kids into the mode of the Veterans Day Program and teaches them about some of the traditions that go on as far as the military goes,” said Steve Guider of Blaine High School.
This year was Blaine High School’s second annual all-school Veteran’s Day Ceremony. In previous years, they had a smaller ceremony in a part of a school that was too small for everyone to attend.
Guider said, “While it’s not typical, in the past we used to do a Veterans Day program, that used to be in our auditorium, and there were only a few classes that were invited to that, because it couldn’t hold the whole school. And then, probably for about six years, we didn’t do much of anything.”
Steve said that these displays can help get students in the mindset to welcome veterans and thank them for their service.
“So we’re just trying to educate the kids just on the value of the American Flag, what it stands for, and the sacrifice that people have made for that flag,” summarized Guider.
