BLAINE, Minn. (August 15, 2013) – The Minnesota Department of Public Safety recently completed a 5 year study of traffic safety data. The study concentrated on serious injury and fatal accidents in cities with a population greater than 25,000.
The study showed that Blaine has decreased these types of accidents by an average of just over 7% from 2008 to 2012. This was the third largest drop of all similar sized cities across the state. The Blaine Police Department credits numerous factors in this decrease. The department has been active in DWI and speed saturation zones, they have increased the amount of public education and awareness regarding safe driving habits, and roadway improvements have been made designed to increase safety in the city.
Additionally, seat belt usage rates in the cited have increased by more than 10% since 2006. The department will continue to roll out new initiatives to make Blaine roads even safer. In fact, just this summer they have started a traffic enforcement unit that is targeting specific areas and dangerous driving behaviors.
