BLAINE, Minn. – A man is being charged with felony drug possession and the theft of a motor vehicle, following his arrest in Blaine. It started when a Blaine Police Officer ran a routine license plate check on a 1978 Corvette. The officer noticed that the license plate did not match the car it was supposed to be registered to. Police stopped the car and found 28-year-old Anthony Wayne LaPointe driving.
The officer noted three large knives in plain view, one of which was on LaPointe’s waistband. The officers searched the car and found a stolen laptop, a bag containing more than 6 grams of methamphetamine, and several sets of keys, as well as license plates to a different car.
LaPointe claims he had purchased the Corvette three weeks ago and that he owned the laptop. He denied that the drugs were his and refused to produce the vehicle’s title until his release from jail.
If guilty, LaPointe could face up to 25 years in prison and $260,000 in fines.
