BLAINE, Minn – (April 20, 2017) – Blaine High School sophomore Caleb VanArragon had quite the day on the golf course this week. Caleb shot a 63 which was good for -9 at the Blaine Invitational held at the TPC Twin Cities. Caleb knew early on in his round that it was going to be a good day.
“Well I started off and I made a quick par and then the second hole I made a birdie off of a 15-foot putt, and then I made another 15-foot putt on the next hole for par then I made another 15-foot on the next hole for birdie so after that, I knew that I was off,” said VanArragon.
It wasn’t until later that night that he found out just how special his round was. It turns out that his score of 63 is the lowest round ever recorded in Minnesota boys high school golf history, a feat he still can’t believe he accomplished.
“That’s amazing, I can’t believe that I just did it, I know I’m gonna have a lot of trouble topping it next time but I’m looking forward to it,” he said.
VanArragon, who has been playing golf since the age of three, knows that it will be hard to ever top his magical round from this week but he continues to practice and hone his skills in hopes of helping his team bring home a trophy at the end of the season.
“For our team I want us to win the conference again this year.” he said. “This would be our fourth time in a row so I’m really hoping we could do that, and then make it to the state tournament for the first time in a long time.”
Not only does he have high hopes for his team, he’s setting his own personal standards pretty high as well.
“Individually, make it to state, win the conference, win as much as I can, do as well as I can for our team,” he said.
VanArragon has been playing on the Blaine High School team since he was in middle school and said that not knowing he was going for the record probably helped him remain calm as he sunk one final 15-foot putt to complete his amazing feat.
