(BLAINE) -The city of Blaine has approved its first inclusive playground which is meant for use by children of all abilities. The new play structure will replace a 17 year old playground at the Blaine Baseball Complex near the new Challenger Field. The playground is being installed by the same company.
City officials say their vision was to improve accessibility for all ages and ability levels to enjoy together.
Council member Jess Robertson says the city is becoming a leader in developing adaptive play areas.
“I know it’s a big price tag but you know for this kind of stuff this is what our community is. If we can’t be the kind of community that supports families of all shapes, all sizes and all abilities then we’re failing our community,” said Robertson. “To be a leader this way and to be the first playground like this in the area, I just think it’s so awesome.”
The price tag is about $171,000. The new playground is expected to be open this fall.
