National School Lunch Week was established in 1962 under John F. Kennedy, the week highlights the importance of school lunch for children inside and outside of school. The National School Lunch Program, a federally funded program, serves nearly 30 million students daily.
Schools like Blue Heron celebrated by offering different food in their menus and also decreased the price of school breakfast. The school is also teaching students about a nearby orchard, they will watch a video and do activities alongside the program.
During the COVID-19 pandemic schools across the nation began to provide students with free lunch. Now that the pandemic is winding down, schools like Blue Heron Elementary will not be offering students free lunch.
With energy prices going up, schools are increasing their lunch prices, Blue Heron Elementary however did not follow the trend. School officials are trying to keep prices down, so children don’t have to worry about getting their next meal.
“We did not increase prices like many districts did. We feed students no matter what their balances are. Breakfast and lunch everyday,” said Tara Forner, Director of Nutrition Services.
