HAM LAKE, Minn. – Last month the resolution of the NHL lockout brought hockey fans abroad out of their misery. Interestingly, another hockey league was just beginning their season as well. These participants may be considered skate less, but their boots are not meant for shoveling. They call it Boot Hockey.
“Boot Hockey is a different version of actual hockey,” mentioned Lisa Sweeden, Boot Hockey Coordinator, “They use broomball shoes to get the best grip on the ice, people out here with boots slide everywhere.
The game is played on a slightly smaller, manmade rink and consists of three 14-minute periods. The rules match up quite similar to real hockey with the exception of a no-checking amendment. The rink is home to co-ed and men’s leagues every Monday – Thursday night, as well as a Juniors league on Sundays in January.
“Teams consist of between eight to ten players so we get quite a few people out here,” explained Sweeden.
After being hosted outdoor previously, boot hockey was moved into a homemade rink for its second and third seasons. “We make all the boards, then flood the rink, then hang up the decorations and the jerseys,” said Sweeden.
Through a few years of experience, Majestic Oaks has managed to effectively floor and maintain the rink, leaving perfect conditions for any age to play some puck. “Definitely something to try if you’ve never played Boot Hockey before,” said Sweeden.
