BLAINE, Minn. – How good are you at eating your vegetables? And, how good are you kids? We all know that we should be eating several servings and fruits and vegetables every day, but not all of us actually eat as many as are recommended. One local snack shop is trying to change that. Instead of changing how people eat, they are changing the face of fast food style desserts by infusing all of their frozen yogurt with a special blend of ingredients that include broccoli.
At first glance, Yogurt Sundae appears to be somewhat similar to other frozen yogurt shops in the area. They have several flavor options and plenty of fruit and candy toppings. However, this isn’t just your standard frozen yogurt. This yogurt is blended with a proprietary mix that includes buckwheat, parsley, carrots, broccoli, spinach, green tea, enzymes, and more.
Owner Franco Romero says that each serving of yogurt contains 45 superfoods, and about three servings of fruits and vegetables. He says that because of this unique concept, he gets some people coming into the store asking which yogurt is the special veggie yogurt.
“They’re looking around for this special kind of veggie yogurt, and it’s not like that. It’s actually in every one of the yogurts.”
But, he also get people who are a little confused and cautious when they learn what is in their dessert.
“Often times I get a little bit of this look like, ‘Oh… really? It’s got carrots in it? It’s got broccoli in it?'” said Romero.
Romero has been working in the nutrition field for more than twenty years, and is interested is making food as nutritious as possible. He worked on making this special blend of superfoods for years, going through several revisions before he came up with one that he thought would work well in yogurt.
Yogurt Sundae is located in Blaine, on the southeast corner of Highway 65 and County Road 14. They are currently open from 12-9 Sunday through Thursday, and 12-10 Friday and Saturday. The 18 flavors of yogurt they have will rotate on a regular basis, and they are working up to having 100 different toppings to choose from.
