The 19-year-old admits she has social anxiety and general shyness, but she’s grateful for the opportunity to learn skills commensurate with a career in retail.
“It does get you out of your comfort zone, a bit,” said Krantz.
She has no trouble showing customers around the tiny store, as they look for dress clothes or formal wear they may need for a job interview or a special occasion. And they aren’t paying customers. Everything is donated in–and out.
“The more we get in, the more we can give away to students,” said Work Experience and Handicapped Coordinator Paula Holden. “There’s many opportunities to use the clothing here.”
Holden said they welcome in special needs students and adults, along with veterans and their families.
She also knows the value for students like Krantz in learning how to deal with customers.
“We’re teaching soft skills: how to take criticism, how to take direction, how to work in a speedy way, how to do things properly (and) as you’re told,” said Holden.
The Pathways Program is housed at the Family Center at 11238 Crooked Lake Blvd NW in Coon Rapids.
