CARS FOR NEIGHBORS KEEPS PEOPLE ON THE ROAD

HAM LAKE, Minn. – (Aug. 22, 2019) – With a couple of part time employees, the non-profit Cars for Neighbors has been able to make about 4000 car repairs.

“Even though we’ve been around 20 years, we’re still one of the best kept secrets in Anoka County,” said Jim Huff, executive director of Cars for Neighbors.

They help fix cars. Anyone in Anoka County can apply for help from Cars for Neighbors if they are having trouble paying for car repairs. They work with Meineke car care in Ham Lake to get the job done. Meineke nearly halves the hourly rate they typically charge for repairs coming through Cars for Neighbors.

Ultimately, their goal is to keep people working, and keep families are self-sufficient as possible. And sometimes that’s as easy as taking care of their brake repair for them.

“One of the biggest reason people lose jobs is not having reliable transportation,” said board member Joe McKenzie. So, Cars for Neighbors works to keep transportation reliable. In an are like Ham Lake with few buses, having a working car through all the seasons is important.

They welcome donations from anyone who wants to help them with their mission. They are happy to take monetary donations, and they are also happy to take car donations, even if the car is dead. They take the usable parts of the car and recycle the rest.  A car that’s no longer driveable usually nets Cars for Neighbors about $250, and that’s enough to replace brakes, or put in a new battery or two.

“If we can put a couple tires on somebody’s car replace tires, if we can help replace the brakes and make that car safer,” said Huff, “we think that’s a really great investment. Not only in that family, or that individual, but in our community here in Anoka County.”

In just a few weeks, Cars for Neighbors is having one of its largest fundraising events of the year. It’s called Carsino Night. It will feature funny-money with pull tabs and poker.

There will also be dinner and entertainment. It will be September 12 in the evening at Coon Rapids Civic Center. You can learn more or buy tickets to the event here.
