Circle Pines city councilmember on Times Square billboard

CIRCLE PINES – (Nov. 27, 2023) – Circle Pines city council member Dean Goldberg is a retired pharmacist.

“I spent most of my professional career as a pharmacist talking about diabetes teaching about diabetes,” said Goldberg.

He also lives with diabetes, and now uses a continuous glucose monitoring system made by Dexcom.

“I’ve lived with type 1 diabetes for 61 years. And, I just started using this device maybe four years ago. And I get occasional emails from them. And they invited people to become a Dexcom warrior. And, I said, ‘That’s cool, maybe I’ll get a coffee cup.’”

But what he got was more than that.

“They sent me an email and said, ‘would you like to come out to New York for a photo shoot?’”

There was a photo shoot, a billboard in Times Square, and he got to be a part of ringing in the opening bell at the NASDAQ stock exchange.

“It was fun,” said Goldberg.

Other Dexcom warrior include Nick Jonas and Patti Labelle.

“I got to meet Patti. In fact, I have a picture of Patti and I hugging each other and it was kind of cool to be able to meet her,” said Goldberg.

But, Goldberg isn’t in it for the fame, for him it’s about finding ways of making health care opportunities better for everyone.

“I think it’s important to raise people’s awareness of diabetes and the things that are out there that they can use to Help improve the quality of their care. That’s why I’m was interested in doing this. That’s exactly why I said yes, because I thought what a great opportunity.”

And along this journey, he’s also got the chance to get to know people who share a story.

“I don’t know what the Dexcom Warrior thing will turn into, but I’ve enjoyed it. And you know, the thing that I really maybe like the most about it is The first time I got together with the Warriors, I realized it’s so rare that you get together with a group of people who live with diabetes. And you’re listening to everybody’s story, and you realize, this is normal for all of us, but not for everybody else.”

“Living with diabetes is not easy, but controlling your blood sugar, your blood pressure, and lipids is incredibly important if you want to live a long life. And it’s worth the effort and it’s worth getting the education so you can do those things and keep yourself in good control so that you can be healthy,” said Goldberg.
