RAMSEY – Connexus Energy is asking for the public’s help with information about vandals who broke into four sub-stations, stole equipment, and caused serious damage. The thieves cut holes in fences to gain access. A photo provided by Connexus shows a burned area where the vandalism started a fire, possibly injuring someone. One of the break-ins caused a power outage for about 2,000 customers.
Connexus officials warn breaking into a substation creates a serious safety risk for Connexus workers, public safety responders, and even the thieves themselves.
“These substations have power at 7200 volts and have power coming in at 69,000 volts. So the outlet in your home can kill you these definitely can too,” said Manager Nick Loehlein of Connexus. “Someone can get very seriously injured and die from this activity. That’s why there are caution signs posted on the fences that say, ‘Stay out, caution.’ This is not a place for people to be in. People who do this think they may understand the hazard, I can guarantee you they do not,” he said.
The vandalism happened the week of April 28 in Sherburne and Isanti counties. Connexus is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction. If you have information about the vandalism, you are asked to call Connexus at 763-323-2750. If you see a theft or break-in in progress, call 911.
