A couple of streets that intersect with 109th Avenue will get upgrades for expected detours that coincide with interchange projects on nearby Minnesota State Highway 65. On Wednesday there was an open house at Blaine City Hall so residents can know what to expect.
The busy road is getting a makeover in two key spots.
“Anoka County is going to be improving the intersections of Radisson Road and 109th Avenue and 109th Avenue and Tournament Players Parkway,” said Jorge Bernal of the Anoka County Transportation Department.
The county is definitely fast-tracking these projects.
“It’s what we call an intersection improvement project in the county,” Bernal said. ” We do quite a few of these along the county road system. This one is special because we’re doing it in preparation of the big construction that’s going to be happening on trunk highway 65 and we’re doing it at a very accelerated schedule.”
Curious residents
Radisson and 109th handles plenty of traffic on a daily basis. The open house drew lots of curious residents who showed up to see exactly what changes are coming to this intersection.
“We will be doing some big improvements at the intersection of Radisson Road and 109th,” Bernal said. “We’ll be adding duel left turn lanes to the intersection. Doing some new pavement improvements. We’ll be adding ADA improvements as well. We are replacing the old signal system at that location.”
Meanwhile the other intersection upgrade off 109th includes some new additions that are designed to enhance traffic flow.
“We are also adding a new signal system at Tournament Players Parkway,” Bernal said. “It will be a brand new signal at that intersection with ADA improvement. Hopefully those improvements will help us move all the traffic that will be using some of the local roads during construction of the trunk highway 65 project. That’s a four-year project. These improvements will help make travel along this area a little more efficient during that construction.”
Everything starts in August right after the USA Cup and 3M Open take place in July and will continue through the end of the road construction season.
Anoka County is working in partnership with the City of Blaine and MnDOT on these projects.
