ANOKA, Minn. – Steven Miller, 39, was sentenced Friday by Anoka County District Court Judge Sean Gibbs to a prison sentence of 21 months and ordered to pay $1,085 in fees and $12,000 in restitution to the victim’s family. The prison time was stayed and Miller was ordered to spend 90 days in jail and was placed on probation for 10 years.
Miller admitted to swindling an 82-year-old vulnerable adult, now deceased, resulting in the theft of over $65,000, jewelry and a vehicle. Ordering restitution to a victim’s family is not common practice, though it was sought in this case by the County Attorney’s Office.
“Unfortunately the victim in this case passed away before Mr. Miller was tried for his offenses. I am satisfied that Mr. Miller is still required to pay restitution to the family, along with completing his jail sentence,” stated Anoka County Attorney Tony Palumbo.
“Mr. Miller took advantage of someone who was vulnerable – an inexcusable crime that is sadly becoming more common in our community,” said Palumbo.
