COUNTY ATTORNEY RECEIVES FEDERAL COVID RELIEF MONEY TO ADD REMOTE FACILITIES FOR FUTURE HEARINGS

(ANOKA) – County Attorney Tony Palumbo’s office requested more than $150,000 in federal CARES Act relief money from Anoka County commissioners so his office could soon be home to a remote hearing facility. Palumbo said in the age of COVID-19, his office is sending attorneys to fewer and fewer in-person proceedings on behalf of the state.  He said some attorneys are even attending hearings or other matters before judges and courts via Webex or Zoom platforms.

“I was just talking to one of our division managers, and (he/she said) right in the middle of of the hearing, it goes blank,” said Palumbo. “That gets to be frustrating, not just for our people but for everybody involved in the court proceeding.”

The virtual conferencing space will allow attorneys to try entire sides of a criminal or civil matter from a secure conference room in the county attorney’s office in the government center.  Palumbo hopes that once its completed, it can help clear the inevitable logjam of cases that are piling up as a result of COVID-related cancellations and postponements.

“It’s a significant,” he said. “It’s in the thousands. People are on a continuum in terms of sensitivity. Those that are the most sensitive about it are taking extreme precautions. The people (that) are far less concerned, and many fall on that continuum in the middle We’ve had to react to that continuum, so to speak, by our technology, (and) by our methods of working with the courts.”

County leaders also hope other departments and agencies can use the space for virtual meetings, conferences, and even remote media appearances.
