These days the fertile soil is covered by snow as growing season is months away. But when sign ups for 2026 planting spaces opened on Wednesday the plots were gobbled up fast.
“It probably had filled by noon said Lizabeth Rynders who is with Blaine Parks and Recreation. “It was pretty quick to go. We fill up pretty much every single year.”
Rynders believes there is a reason these gardening spots are coveted by North Metro residents.
“They want to get outside,” Rynders said. “It’s relaxing. Little bit of physical work. I think it is good community. A lot of the gardeners come back so they get to know each other. They kind of share tips.”
Short growing season
North Metro residents also want to soak up as much mild weather as they can.
“I think that we cherish it maybe a little bit more because it’s such a short growing season,” Rynders said. “I think that as soon as you can get planting you’re chomping at the bit to get out there and see what you can grow.”
There are over 60 spots in the Blaine community gardens and prices fluctuate by size.
“Full plots are 20 by 15 feet,” Rynders said. “Half plots are 15 by 10 feet. We have a couple of raised garden beds 4 by 8 feet. ADA accessible garden beds that are about 44 square feet.”
By mid to late May the growing season starts and eventually will yield bright orange pumpkins, juicy red tomatoes, corn and other crops.
There is also a dazzling display of colorful flowers in some of the garden spots.
