SPRING LAKE PARK, Minn. – (Dec. 1, 2016) – This week the Spring Lake Park School District was hit by a cyber attack.
The attack was a ransomware attack that is designed to make the victim pay in order to regain access to their system. The school district technology staff were able to restore their system without the need to pay the ransom.
The district has alerted local authorities, including the local FBI field office and investigations are underway. The cyber attack did not gain access to any private student, staff or family data.
At this point in the investigation it appears that this was a newer virus that was able to penetrate all virus scanning software.
Spring Lake Park was just one victim of a recent ransomware attack. Many other schools have been hit with similar attacks recently including Carlton College in Northfield just this week.
