BLAINE, Minn. – (May 21, 2015) – Next weekend the planes will come out for the annual Discover Aviation Days at the Anoka County Blaine Airport. It’s open to all aviation enthusiast or people who simply want to learn more. Craig Schiller, a board member for the event hopes that families come out as well.
“Discover Aviation Days is an annual aviation event that has been taking place here at the Blaine airport for about 25 years. It is technically a free event to the public but we ask for a parking donation to help support the event cost and it’s an all around aviation event.”
It originally started as a fly in breakfast. Pilots from the surrounding area still fly in for the breakfast and the lunch that is served after. The event features hands on activities as well as historical aspects with veterans from WWII all up to modern military.
“This has all aspects or many aspects of aviation, from education, for hands on activities for kid, WWII aircraft demonstrations, vintage aircraft experimented, home builds, gliders, hot air balloon, so we’ve got a lot of different aspects of aviation on display along with the aircraft,” Schiller said.
There will be several exhibits for attendees to learn about aviation from a technical side as well. Schiller says one of the biggest attractions is a chance for people to actually be in the air.
“We also have helicopter rides, fixed wing airplane rides as well as open cock pit by plane rides so those are kind of the favorite of the ride program and then a lot of the war birds that will be flying in and many aspects for those to see and take part of,” Schiller said.
The weekend will also feature a hangar dance Saturday night where people can come dressed in their best 1940s attire. Discover Aviation Days will take place May 30-31 running from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day at the Anoka County Blaine Airport.
