COON RAPIDS, Minn. — The fire had started with the electric system of a fish tank, but the in-home sprinkler system was able to almost completely put out the flames before firefighters arrived.
When they got to the scene, they discovered that the home was very smoky, and learned that a dog could still be inside. Firefighters went upstairs and found a frightened dog hiding in the closet and surrounded by black smoke. The dog was breathing, but needed some prodding to leave the closet. Firefighters were able to put a leash on the dog and convince him to come out and downstairs. Once downstairs, he was united with his owner.
An Allina crew trained in basic animal rescue was on the scene and they were able to clean the soot off the dog, and provide him with a fresh supply of oxygen.
The homeowner told firefighters that he had been gone for about an hour while he was taking his other dog to the vet. He saw the smoke coming from his house when
he got home.
