FRIDLEY, Minn. – (April 26, 2018) – A 24 year old man died in a house fire Tuesday evening in Fridley. The Fridley Fire Department responded to the call at 340 Hugo Street NE around 8:00 p.m. that night.
A Fridley Engine with two firefighters arrived within 6 minutes and found heavy fire conditions on the main level of the 1 ½ story home. Firefighters were told that an individual was still in the home on the second level.
Captain Matthew Allard and Firefighter Benjamin Knowles risked entering a second level window but were forced out by the intense heat. Fire Chief John Berg said, “The firefighters demonstrated a willingness to risk their own lives and safety to attempt the rescue in very dangerous conditions.”
DJ Wasserman, 24, was discovered deceased after the fire was extinguished.
Firefighters from the Spring Lake Park, Blaine Mounds View Fire Department assisted in extinguishing the fire. We are grateful for their response to our emergency, as well as members of the Anoka County Fire Investigation Team and the law enforcement agencies that assisted in the investigation.
