(ANOKA) – Anoka County Board Of Commissioners members treated retiring County Engineer Doug Fischer to an impromptu series of tributes at the October 8 meeting.
Fischer, who worked for the county for 25 years, is retired as of October 10. Along the way, he oversaw such major construction projects as the Highway 10 and Armstrong Boulevard interchange in Ramsey, the Highway 65 and Main Street interchange in Blaine, and the Hanson Boulevard overpass in Coon Rapids.
“In total, Doug has overseen a half a billion dollars’ worth of projects in his time as engineer,” said Board Vice-Chair Julie Braastad. “Anoka County’s roads and bridges are definitely way better off than when Doug first arrived.”
Many of her fellow commissioners and leaders including County Attorney Tony Palumbo praised Fischer for always working with staff and elected officials to make sure they understood where his department stood on the business of helping the county.
“I’ve been very fortunate,” Fischer told the commissioners and the crowd. “It’s been a great privilege and honor to have served in this capacity. It’s been a fun, fun, fantastic ride.”
Fischer will continue working with a private engineering firm in a leadership role.
Commissioners will likely appoint Assistant County Engineer Joe MacPherson as Fischer’s replacement at the next meeting on Oct. 22.
