For Blaine and the 3M Open there’s plenty of PGA Tour harmony

BLAINE, Minn. (7/2/2025) – Get ready for some golf in the North Metro.

The 2025 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities starts July 21 and wraps up July 27. This will be the seventh 3M Open at TPC.

There’s clearly PGA Tour harmony between Blaine and the 3M Open as both sides recently agreed to a five-year extension to keep the tournament at TPC  through 2030.

“The city of Blaine and Anoka County are incredible partners in this process,” said Mike Welch, the 3M Open Tournament Director. “To have the course here in the city of Blaine and the county is great for us, great for them. The partnership we have with them keeps paying off. We truly believe it’s a win-win.”

“Just really helps showcase what is the best of Blaine to the entire world,” said Blaine Mayor Tim Sanders. “We’re so grateful to be able to have the 3M Open, to be the host city for it. It’s so phenomenal. We can’t wait for an amazing tournament.”

Northern swing

Welch addressed the press on media day last month at TPC. He is excited about some new twists to this year’s tournament, including the Northern swing – which is a creative spin off from the Florida and West Coast swings on the PGA tour.

“We’re leaning into the north,” Welch said. “We’re leaning into being hearty Minnesotans. We’re gonna do a fun thing where we chop down a tree in the northernmost part of the state and make a golf club out of it and see how that thing plays. Going to play golf on Lake Minnetonka which seems crazy but we’ll have a lot of fun with that. Leaning into the ethos of north and Minnesota, and looking forward to see how that concept plays out.”

“I think that’s what is so amazing about this,” Sanders said. “It’s not just about golf. It’s the northern swing. It’s golf that matters. They’re able to kind of reinvent and make it fresh every single year which I think is so important.”

3M Open trending up

When golf fans flock back to this year’s 3M Open, there’s a good chance they will leave happy.

“Each year it gets bigger and better,” Welch said. “Attendance grows, corporate support grows. I think just the brand of the 3M Open grows. It’s been wonderful to see the progression.”

The 3M Open is clearly trending up. The only challenge left for Welch is to convince Minnesotans to give up a weekend at their coveted cabins up north to watch golf.

“We do feel like each and every year we’re getting more and more folks to cross off one, two, sometimes three or four of those days,” Welch said.

Jhonattan Vegas won the 2024 3M Open. This year’s tournament purse is $8.4 million with $1.458 million going to the champion.
