Hope for the Community Food Shelf finished 2020 serving 43,000 families more than 2 million pounds of groceries. A year after the start of a pandemic that cost many families jobs, Dr. Alan Goracke, founder of Hope for the Community, says the need is still great.
Those efforts stand to get a boost since Hope for the Community was chosen by TPC ROSE as the beneficiary of fundraising efforts this year.
“The fact that they serve over 900 families a week is very impactful,” said TPC ROSE President Sharon Krumme. “I think a lot of the women felt that just because of the need in the community this year, it was appropriate to vote for Hope for the Community.”
TPC ROSE, is a group made up of about 50 professional women. Since their inception in 2008, they’ve raised nearly $1.2 million dollars for area causes through a summer golf tournament at the TPC and a November Moonlight Gala. Some of those causes have included housing, support for the terminally ill, and domestic abuse services. Each year they choose one beneficiary.
“We want to empower that beneficiary to make a difference and we occasionally get the question on why we don’t have numerous beneficiaries every year and that is the reason,” said Krumme. “We want to make an impact to one beneficiary and make it worthwhile.” She adds, “The community has been very generous to us, thank goodness.”
Goracke says he will use the money to expand service beyond the food shelves the organization already runs.
“We believe that during this time we have built capacity through our organization. We would like to actually expand. We have 4 locations now, in the next 18 months to 2 years we would like to add another 4 locations,” Goracke said.
Goracke says they’re finding different needs in rural communities and among college students. They are grateful for the help.
“It’s awesome to partner with like-minded people who are generous and care about their neighbors.”
