(BLAINE) – Local Girl Scouts are reaching out with a membership offer that’s hard to beat, because it’s free. Scouts say during these uncertain times, girls are going through high levels of isolation, and they say scouting can help. So the Girl Scouts River Valleys of Minnesota and Wisconsin are waiving the $25 membership fee through the end of February.
Tammy Broderick is a scout leader in Ham Lake and Blaine.
“This is an unusual time. Girls are experiencing an unusual amount of stress and anxiety, even about school. They’re unsure about how school is going to go,” says Broderick. “So this is a way to give every girl an opportunity to be a Girl Scout.”

They’re also re-thinking what troop meetings and activities look like. In addition to safely distanced outdoor activities like sledding or snow-shoeing, there are new “E”-Troops where girl meet electronically and do activities with the help of scout leaders.
“My group is kindergarten and first graders,” says Broderick. “We actually are meeting virtually right now. We do zoom and I get all the things together, then I do a porch drop of all the activities for a month at their home.”
Interested families can sign up online at the Girl Scout River Valleys home page: www.girlscoutsrv.org/ or text “JOIN” to 74253. It’s free to sign up through the end of the month.
