COON RAPIDS, Minn. — This week another road construction began. On Highway 10, from Hanson Boulevard in Coon Rapids to Fairoak Avenue in Anoka, crews will be spending the next three months resurfacing the road.
Along with resurfacing, crews will also do some drainage improvements, replace curb and gutters, improve accessibility, and rehab bridges along the stretch.
This is one of the most traveled roadways in the north metro area. “There are about 60,000 people that travel that roadway on a daily basis,” explains MnDOT Public Affairs representative Denise Workcuff, “it is really about time that we do something to that road.”
The majority of lane closures will happen during off peak hours, usually starting after 7:00 P.M. As a result, most commuters should miss the brunt of the delays. However, commuters driving early in the morning or in the evening should prepare for some construction and lanes closures. “If they’re driving at night they should prepare for delays because there will be single lane traffic,” advises Workcuff.
The exception to this rule will be in August when the stretch from Fairoak Avenue to 7th Avenue will be reduced to one lane. Overall, Workcuff says that while the project will cause drivers some headaches over the coming months, the results will be worth it, with a safer, smoother road for years to come.
Workcuff assures drivers, “While it may be an inconvenience for motorists for now, it will be a better road for them to travel and a safer road as well.”
If construction continues as scheduled, the project should be complete by late October.
Motorists should also be aware of another upcoming road closure in Anoka. MnDOT will be closing Highway 47/Ferry Street at the railroad tracks, just north of Highway 10, for about a week in August for safety improvements.
