BLAINE, Minn. – (April 2, 2015) – Last week, the Blaine Youth Hockey Association teamed up against the Blaine Police Federation in a hockey game to raise money for a good cause.
“We could not be happier that these cops get to come out and play a bunch of youngsters who hope to look up to these policemen and see that they actually do try to make a difference and are a positive role model for them,” said Blaine Police Department Officer Joe Ramirez.
Half of the proceeds from the event went to a Blaine Youth Hockey family in need as well as Jack’s Basket, an organization formed by Blaine Hockey Coach Chris Carroll and his wife after their son, Jack, was born with Down syndrome. Carroll says there are a lot of misconceptions for those who receive this diagnosis for their child, and Jack’s Basket aims to provide resources and guidance to these families.
“It’s and organization that’s really geared towards bridging the gap between the medical community and children that are born with the diagnosis of Down syndrome. It’s just a great organization that my wife has the opportunity alongside some other families to go in and give a personal perspective on what it’s like raising a child that has the diagnosis of Down syndrome,” said Carroll.
Both the coaches and the kids had a great time at the game and even ended with everyone from both teams on the ice at once. This is an event that Blaine Hockey and the Police Federation hope to continue for years to come.
