ANOKA, Minn. (Oct. 4, 2013) – The Anoka-Hennepin School District is welcoming classroom volunteers and putting in the effort to train them to be effective in the classroom. A recent volunteer meeting last month attracted community members, business leaders, parents, grandparents, and retirees who were looking to maximize their time and efficiency while volunteering at elementary schools. This special training process has been dubbed “K-Skillbuilders” and is comprised of a variety of activities that volunteers can practice with students 1-on-1 in the classroom. These activities include:
- Reading aloud
- Tracing the alphabet
- Sorting and finding letters
- Listening to various sounds and counting
- Building number recognition
The activities will reinforce skills that teachers have previously introduced to the kindergarteners through lesson plans. Trained volunteers will be able to better respond to the students’ individual needs, as requested by the teacher. The district hopes to implement the K-Skillbuilders program in each grade level at Anoka-Hennepin elementary schools in the near future. Additional K-Skillbuilder training sessions will be offered in October.
