BLAINE, Minn. – (July 14, 2016) – More than 100 kids spent a few days this week learning valuable lessons designed to keep them safe as they grow up. “This is our 20th annual safety camp. We bring together our police department, the fire department and our parks and recreation department. We sponsor this program for third going into fourth grade kids. To come and spend two days with us at the first station to learn about all different kinds of safety topics” said Andrea Hunt of the Blaine police department.
Safety Camp organizers target this age group for a very important reason. “Unintentional injury is the leading cause of death for kids this age”
Several of the original safety camp attendees now have kids that are going through the program and are a testament to the impact of the camp. “They will still remember the things that they learned when they were at camp.”
Topics covered include water safety, fire safety, electrical safety, Internet safety, brain injury prevention, personal safety, bully prevention and much more. The camp includes a special visit from the Blaine Police K9 Unit and a Safety Magician.
The adult counselors for the camp are police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and recreation staff.
