Lee Janzen joined the Champions Tour when he turned 50 last September. He started seriously playing golf and the age of 14 and over the years has learned the right way to practice. Janzen comments, “It took me a long time to practice efficiently… I think I probably wasted a lot of time practicing when I was younger. The good news was that I had a drive to practice. So, the hours and hours, and hours- I wasn’t doing [it] just to practice, I did it because I really wanted to and I wanted to improve. But I know enough now… I could have improved probably with less effort if I would have tailored my practice better.” Janzen always hits the range to warm up and gets some practice work in there as well, but for him he prefers to practice on the actual course. “…Practice my routine, practicing my decision making, visualizing- all of that stuff is important. I guess I don’t do as good of a job on the range pretending,” says Janzen. Janzen had 8 wins on the PGA Tour including twice winning the U.S Open. He earned his first win on the Champions Tour earlier this year and feels there is nothing easy about winning on the over 50 circuit. “I can tell you that even though I’m playing with guys that are 50 year and older, winning is not easy, it’s still hard.” Janzen continues, “You always have to pull off a shot that seemingly changes the round. So, [and] be able to keep in the present and keep going, and hit each shot like it doesn’t really matter- just another shot- that’s always the biggest challenge.” Janzen and 80 of his friends have been busy practicing, to once again show Minnesota golf fans that the players on the Champions Tour can still turn in some impressive performances on the golf course.
Lee Janzen Talks Golf and the Champions Tour
BLAINE, Minn. – (July 30, 2015) – Players on the Champions Tour have been playing golf for 30, 40 sometimes more than 50 years, but you will still see them working on their game and honing their craft. The players competing in the 3M Championship began arriving in town several days before the first round of the tournament. Many are playing in pro-ams during the week, but they can use those types of events to practice on the course.
