ST. PAUL, Minn. – (April, 7, 2016) – Four local state legislators have announced that 2016 will be their last year serving the citizens of their district and another may lose his seat at the capitol as his party backs a new face. The representation of the north metro will look a lot different at the state capitol next year. Several local legislators have announced that 2016 will be their last year in St. Paul. Senators Barb Goodwin(DFL), Bev Scalze(DFL) and Alice Johnson(DFL) have formerly announced their retirements from the Minnesota Senate. Representative Tim Sanders(R) has also announced his retirement from the Minnesota House.
Additionally, Representatives Jerry Newton(DFL) and Carolyn Laine(DFL) will not be running for reelection in their house districts instead they will run for the senate seats being vacated by Goodwin and Johnson. Finally, at last weekend’s GOP endorsing convention in district 31, long time representative Tom Hackbarth(R), who has not announced his retirement, was not endorsed by his party. The party instead chose to endorse newcomer Carl Bahr. Hackbarth has served in the Minnesota legislature for 10 terms.
