ST. PAUL, Minn. – (April 16, 2015) – This week, the Minnesota State Patrol and law enforcement agencies across the state put an increased effort into finding distracted drivers.
Distracted driving is the leading factor in accidents every year in Minnesota, so this week they focused on people who were texting, driving with headphones, reading emails, and more.
Last year in the state, more than 3,000 citations were issued for texting while driving. In Minnesota, it is illegal for drivers to read, compose or send texts and emails, and access the web while the vehicle is in motion or a part of traffic. That includes sitting at a stoplight or stop sign.
The State Patrol says you should put down your phone, program your GPS before you leave the house, and avoid eating messy foods while driving to help you stay focused on the road.
