BLAINE, Minn. – Every March, Minnesota FoodShare conducts Minnesota FoodShare Month, urging food shelves across the state to boost donations and take part in the annual campaign. The campaign is the largest food drive in the state and restocks almost 300 food shelves across Minnesota. The statewide fund and food drive is currently in its 31st year, and the grassroots effort benefits local food shelves in communities across Minnesota.
Throughout the year, Minnesota FoodShare advocates on behalf of hungry families with state and federal lawmakers and educates the public about hunger in Minnesota. This year, Minnesota FoodShare’s goal is to raise $1 million to give directly to local food shelves. The venture recruits thousands of congregations, companies, schools and community groups to run local fund and food drives to aid in the effort.
Quick facts:
- In 2012, people in Minnesota visited food shelves more than three million times.
- 1 in 8 Minnesotans said that there were times last year when they didn’t have enough money to buy food.
- In October, 547 thousand Minnesota received food support—that’s nearly equivalent to the combined population of Minneapolis, Rochester and Blaine.
