FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. — Dough-Sants, deep fried olives, a trifecta of goodness from a St. Paul staple restaurant, and a North Woods BBQ Taco. While they don’t all come on a stick, these new additions to the Great Minnesota Get-Together will satisfy even the most particular of fairgoers.
The Minnesota State Fair, famed for its brag-worthy selection of food, welcomed over 40 new additions to its repertoire this year. New food options include creations as diverse as lobster macaroni & cheese from Oodles of Noodles, delectably creamy mango ice cream from the Minnesota Farmer’s Union, craft beer battered onion rings from Ballpark Café, and a Three Little Pigs torta from Manny’s Tortas.
The aforementioned Dough-Sant is the lovechild of a croissant and a doughnut, artfully delivered in all of its flaky glory by French Meadow Bakery. Visitors to Fried Fruit On-A-Stick learned a delicious lesson—olives (yes, they’re a fruit!) are best when surrounded in cream cheese and deep-fried. St. Paul restaurant Mancini’s made its State Fair debut this year with plenty of clever offerings, including cicchetti cones—spiral cones of fresh baked bread, each filled with one of the following: antipasti, meatballs, or shrimp fresco. And finally, for particularly ambitious eaters, San Felipe Tacos is offering a taco big enough to satisfy Paul Bunyan himself. Feast your eyes upon the North Woods BBQ Taco, comprised of BBQ pulled pork topped with bourbon syrup and fresh coleslaw, and served on a house-made corncake then wrapped in a flour tortilla.
But enough about our State Fair food picks.
