ST. PAUL, Minn. (August 1, 2013) — Some of the work done at the State Capitol over the last year came to fruition this week, as a number of new laws went into effect.
Most notably, gay marriage became legal statewide.
In addition, there are also several other new laws coming into effect that could affect Minnesotans statewide. In a change to sick leave, employees can now use their sick leave to care for their spouse, parent, grandparent, stepparent or an adult child.
More foreclosure prevention is here as well. Banks can no longer foreclose on a customer at the same time as they are in the process of loan modification to find a way to stay in their home.
Craft beer fans had one big win in this legislative session, allowing for larger breweries to sell their own growlers, or 64 ounce jugs of beer.
Penalties are getting stiffer for phony 911 calls. If someone calls without an emergency, they could be charged with a misdemeanor or a gross misdemeanor for repeat offenders.
One other notable law change means unions in the state can now start the process of seeking exclusive representation for home daycare workers.
