Whatever you call it, the sport is gaining in popularity and there are plenty of courses to choose from in the North Metro, including Lochness Park in Blaine.
There have been no monster sightings at Lochness, but there are plenty of flying saucers.
Lochness Park is a go-to spot for disc golfers in the North Metro.
“Very popular park,” said Nate Monahan from Blaine Parks and Recreation.
“Kind of a hidden little gym back here actually,” said Brian Dejong of Lino Lakes.
On a recent sun-drenched October Monday, Lochness was the perfect spot to be if you like Frisbee golf in an au natural setting.
“It’s incredible,” Dejong said. “It’s beautiful. It’s spacious. It’s just huge. Lots of trees. I think this is pretty sweet.”
“We put this course in back in 2009 and I think it’s just steadily increased in the volume of people that play,” Monahan said.” Not only at Lochness, but just the sport in general has definitely gained some momentum. We get a lot of people calling in just to tell us that they like the uniqueness of our course.”
Frisbee fun
Frolf is definitely catching on around the USA. One reason why, is because just about anyone can take up the sport.
“You can start out your first time and just walk the course and have fun,” Dejong said. “Who cares if you get 10 on a hole.”
Anoka’s Collin Kyro and Brooklyn Park’s Payton Nelson played Lochness for the first time recently and were impressed with the course.
“Very open, which is always nice,” Kyro said. “Lot a lot of trees. I tend to hit trees all the time so if I can keep it out of the woods, it’s always a good day.”
Lochness is a 9-hole course with a large footprint.
“It is long,” Monahan said. “This is an 89 acre park.”
“Great exercise,” Kyro said. “You get a lot of steps in.”
Those who play disc golf seem to have plenty of Frisbee fun.
“Most courses are free to play,” Kyro said…”You can play with one person. I can come play myself. I can play with a group of five or 10 if I want to.”
Walk in the woods
Play every hole at Lochness and you not only get to hone your disc golf game, but you get to walk in the woods as the trees slowly display their fall colors.
“It’s nice to get out and enjoy it, cause we know what’s coming,” Kyro said. “It’s super nice to get out, enjoy the sun, enjoy the nice weather.”
Disc golf at Lochness is about trying to break par and also about being around fantastic scenery. From Cattails blowing in the breeze, to sunlight reflecting off Lochness Lake, there are plenty of postcard-like views.
Said Dejong: “I encourage everybody to get out and play.”
“It’s super fun,” Kyro said. “Just get out.”
The roots of disc golf go back almost 100 years ago when it started in Saskatchewan. The first Frisbee golf course opened in 1975 in Pasadena, CA.
