Giving back was the theme as the the 15th annual Heroes and Helpers event brought happiness and smiles to everyone involved.
“It’s one of my favorite events of the year,” said Emily Douglas from the Blaine Police Department.
Shop til you drop took on new meaning as police, fire and EMT’s were paired with youngsters who received $200 to spend and a Chick fil a gift card.
“We have 70 kids and 72 first responders,” Douglas said…”The school’s pick the children for us.”
This was an all hands on deck day as multiple North Metro agencies were involved.
“Even though the Blane Police Department coordinates it, we have lots of agencies involved,” Douglas said. “Including the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office, Centennial Lakes Police Department, Lino Lakes Police Department, Spring Lake Park Police Department, SBM Fire and Allina EMS.”
Bullseye bonanza
This was clearly win-win for everyone involved.
“I think it really makes a difference in the kids lives but I think it also makes a huge difference for our first responders,” Douglas said. “I think our officers and first responders really look forward to this every year.”
There were plenty of gift choices for the kids who had a chance to get some cool stuff and bond with their shopping partner.
“I got my sister a play beauty salon set and my brother an alphabet train,” said Kyrie, one of the young shoppers.
“They come in and they have a really fun time,” Douglas said. “Sometimes they’ll go get a treat at Starbucks. There’s a photo booth going on and they come with a list and they shop for themselves and their families.”
“I got a yoga gift for my mom and I got a card for my baby brother,” said Canarria, another shopper.
“I got something for my mom, my dad, my brother, my grandma and me,” said Robert, who was very happy with his gift selections.
Clearly this bullseye bonanza made an impact on the young shoppers who were chosen.
“God bless you all,” Canarria said.
They were clearly grateful to be part of this shopping spree.
