BLAINE, Minn. – (Dec. 14, 2017) – Two people will be added to Team USA this weekend in Blaine. The Mixed Doubles Curling Olympic Trials are underway at Fogerty Arena.
“Mixed Doubles is a new discipline for curling. So this will be the very first trials for that discipline and we’re happy to host it here at Fogerty,” said John Benton, director of curling operation at Four Seasons Curling Club.
Mixed doubles uses the same ice set up as 4 person curling but that the way the game is played is much different.
“It is really different when you watch. With two people a lot of times the shooter is actually letting go of the stone and jumping up and sweeping there own stone. It is meant to be a little fast paced game,” said Benton

The process to bring this Olympic Trials event to Blaine started a couple of years ago. With Fogerty Arena and the Four Seasons Curling Club already the official training site of USA Curling it was a natural fit and something that those involved are very proud to bring to the community.
“I’ve said to a lot of people ‘who else has an Olympic trials’…it’s a very prestigious thing to get an Olympic trials,” said Benton.
Tickets for matches start at only $5 and John encourages anyone to come check out the action.
“Come on down there will be plenty of volunteers here if you don’t know the sport,” said Benton.
The 2018 Winter Olympic Games will take place in Pyeongchang, South Korea from February 9th through the 25th.
